This is an entirely new body of work painted during the lockdown in 2020 to 2021.

The subject for these paintings is light. At a time when I was confined to my smaller studio at home, with days getting shorter, the meaning of light, one of the most universal symbols representing hope and wisdom seemed ever more relevant than before.

For me, painting is an interpretation of the fabric, mood and energy of the places I visit. They are not painted in situ but from memory. In this series of work, I have had to rely very much on past travels for inspiration. I have had the opportunity to relive the experiences of places by looking through photographs, sketches and writings and most of all using fragments of visual data to combine with my subjective and emotional response in building this collection. This time of confinement has also given me the opportunity to study more closely from photographs of the works of old masters like Turner and Rembrandt and to see their approach to painting light.

In this body of work, I had particularly focused on the light of morning and evening – that time of the day when all or part of the sky is illuminated by reflected sunlight. In order to do this, I explored several oil mediums and oil colours while adopting an overall looser style. This resulted in a series of work with varying degrees of abstraction. The learning was so invigorating and compelling.
